Dog Problems

Why does paper training slow down housebreaking?
Paper training is suitable for dogs that will always be toiletting indoors on papers (like apartment dwelling Toy Dogs). However, if you want your dog to toilet outdoors using papers inside gives the wrong message. It tells the dog to find a change of surface under his feet and then it is okay to toilet. Rugs are different from tile and paper trained dogs have difficulty distinguishing rugs from papers. The best method is to toilet outside from the get go.

How many hours can my puppy be left alone.
At age 8 to 12 weeks, 2 to 3 hours during the day is average and 4 to 6 hours at night. Puppies have very small bladders and need to empty frequently. Socially, it is never a good idea to leave puppies alone for long periods. Dog walkers and daycare are a good solution for working owners.

Why does my dog jump on people?
A jumping dog gets lots of attention. People shriek, throw their arms in the air, and no one ignores him. The quiet sitting dog is usually passed by as he causes no trouble. You must create a sit habit for your dog. Dogs learn they are only petted or talked to when they're sitting. In fact, they get positive reinforcement for this behavior (food or petting) and lots of attention. We never ignore a sitting dog and we help create a "sit habit." The jumping dog is my number one call for private lessons.

Do I always have to use food for training?
No! We use the food initially to mold the dogs body into the position, be it sit, down, heel, come etc., this keeps our hands off the dog so they really learn the desired behavior rather than be pushed into it. Food is always delivered with praise so when we begin to use the food randomly, we increase our sincere and enthusiastic praise.

Why doesn't my dog come when called?

Why does my puppy nip at my children?
The reason your puppy relates to your children with his mouth is because they behave towards him like another puppy. Children, without knowing better, send many mixed signals to the puppy. Click here to read Puppy's Rules for Fair Play.
